Strategic Communications Goes Beyond Storytelling

2012: Editing townhall scripts while quietly learning ESG principles and performance indicators
2017: Supporting reputation strategy in crisis while exploring impact communications frameworks
2022: Shaping narratives that influenced decisions and built trust
2024: Helping scale culture and mindset by integrating systems thinking into execution

Through it all, one truth became clear:
Strategic communications goes beyond storytelling. It’s about seeing the system, managing consequences, adapting to change and connecting the dots others may not see.

Recently, a different kind of leadership story stood out for me as I read “Imagine It Forward,” by Beth Comstock.

She shares insights and actions on becoming a leader ready to meet change early, navigate ambiguity, and help develop a future few can see.

Her journey—from storyteller to innovation strategist—illustrates what happens when communication meets courage, curiosity, and consistency.

What a strategic alignment.

And yet, in Corporate Affairs, External Relations, and Communications, we often still hear:
“How far with PR for this event?”
“Can your team help with the flyer?”

However, the communications function has never been just about the press or publicity.

It’s about:
• Turning insight into influence
• Clarifying ambiguity for decision-makers
• Holding space for reputation, risk, and renewal

Not all influence looks like command.
Sometimes, it looks like guiding.
Mentoring.
Or providing clarity.

For professionals navigating communications, governance, or stakeholder strategy, this is a good moment to rethink what ‘strategic’ looks like and who’s already doing it.
